The Independence Day ended nearly 200 years of British rule of the island. The first prime minister and architect of independence at that time was the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party and the British governor general of Mauritius who handled the ceremony of the flag at that time was the late Sir John Shaw Rennie.
Independence Day is celebrated with great pomp in the capital every year, most of the time at the race course ground at ‘Champ de Mars’. It is very colourful with wide variety of artists from different cultures performing, singing, dancing and the parading. It is well worth assisting that celebration. The Sega dances always closed the celebration.
