07 Oct
World Habitat Day is observed every year on the first Monday of October throughout the world. It was officially designated by the United Nations and first celebrated in 1986. The purpose of the day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations.
The theme for this year has not been announced yet but whatever it may be the UN want to remind us of the importance of our habitats throughout the world which provide homes for people of all cultures, all ages, both rich and poor.
There are lots of ways to get involved with World Habitat Day. You could organise some popular theatre to raise awareness in a fun way, or use the day to celebrate improvements in your area. Fundraising events like football matches and musical performances are more great ways to raise money, have fun, and donate your proceeds to poor communities around the world.
