This successful attempt follows on from his previous attempt on 31st August 2006, when Nery managed to achieve his target depth but blacked out on the surface.
The Constant Weight Discipline is where the freediver descends and ascends using his fins/monofin and/or with the use of his arms without pulling on the rope or changing his ballast. Constant weight is the most common depth discipline of freediving, often seen in competitions around the world.
Guillaume Néry
Guillaume Néry (born 11 July 1982) is a French freediver specialising in Constant Weight freediving.
He broke the world record in 2002 at -87 meters in the Villefranche-sur-Mer harbour, in Alpes-Maritimes, France. Then, in 2004, he pushed the record to -96 meters in Saint-Leu, la Réunion. On September 6, 2006, he broke the record again at -109 meters in Nice (this record was subsequently broken by Herbert Nitsch at -112 meters in November 2007).
On 2011, Guillaume Néry became individual world champion, with a dive to -117 m in Kalamata. (2012, William Trubridge 121 m)
Video of "Base Jumping" underwater at Dean's Blue Hole
Guillaume Nery showcases his artistic side in a stunning video which went instantly popular.
The world champion freediver took time off during a freediving competition at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas (the World’s second deepest blue hole which plunges 202 meters/663 ft to the ocean floor) to make a short movie that emphasizes aesthetic images and innovative camera moves. The video featuring Guillaume Nery base jumping underwater into the depths of the Blue hole, takes your breath away just watching it. However, Nery clarified earlier rumors that he never reached the bottom which is at an impossible depth of 663 feet! Impressively enough though, the video is filmed entirely on breath hold by Guillaume’s girlfriend and french champion Julie Gautier.
"This video is a FICTION and an ARTISTIC PROJECT, I don't claim to have reached the bottom of the hole (202m) without rope and fins, as the world record in no-fins discipline is 95m.
We made this movie to show another approach in freediving videos.
We wanted to express the strenght of the elements water-earth-air and the sensations of freedom, harmony, exploration."
(Guillaume Nery)
Dean's Blue Hole
The deepest blue hole in the world-at 392 meters (1,286ft) is Pozzo del Merro in Italy. The deepest blue hole in the world with underwater entrance—at 202 metres (663 ft)—is Dean's Blue Hole, located in a bay west of Clarence Town on Long Island, Bahamas.
At the surface, Dean's Blue Hole is roughly circular, with a diameter ranging from 25 to 35 meters. After descending 20 meters, the hole widens considerably into a cavern with a diameter of 100 meters.
Dean's Blue Hole is a popular spot for diving ad snorkeling. At the 2012 freediving world cup in the Bahamas, New Zealand competitor William Trubridge set a world record when he dived to a depth of 121 meters without air in Dean’s Blue Hole.
