Telangana State Formation Day

02 Jun
On 2nd June, 2014, India got its new state - Telangana!
Telangana, the country's 29th state, will be born on June 2 and start functioning from that day.

Indeed, it is a historic event in India, which marks the end of decades of turbulent struggle for a separate statehood. The movement of Telangana demanding a separate statehood has so far witnessed innumerable strikes, protests, suicides and disturbances to public life. Telangana is now officially India’s 29th State of Union, under the leadership of K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

On the eve of Telangana formation day, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief, K Chandrasekhar Rao took over as its first chief minister. The occasion of Telangana formation day was celebrated with pink balloons and an hour long firework display starting at midnight and cultural displays highlighting the language and traditions of the state's people. Hyderabad will serve as the joint capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period of 10 years.

The foundation day of Telangana, the 29th state of the country formed after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, has been declared to be on June 2, 2014 by the Home Ministry. This came after Parliament gave its approval on February 20 for the creation of Telangana by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh.
The declaration of the "Appointed Day" or the foundation day came a day before the Election Commission's proposed announcement of the schedule of the general election. The Election Commission may announce a separate schedule for assembly elections in Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad will be the joint capital of the two states for 10 years.
The Union Cabinet had on Sunday given its nod to accord special category status to the residuary state of Seemandhra for five years.
The central government's proposals for the residuary state include a six-point development package for Seemandhra like tax incentives among other concessions.
The Centre has also imposed President's rule in Andhra Pradesh after the resignation of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
